Credit Cards - DIYD, DIYDont
It seems you can't even leave the house today without hearing some horror story or another concerning credit cards.
- Someone has 50 cards at once, is maxed out on each at $5000. Thats...$250,000! And at 20% APR, thats a dangerous, dangerous debt.
- Or another someone has a single credit card - the numbers are stolen, and they're up the creek without having the benefit of material things.
- OR you walk into a supermarket, find you're out of money and you know that bank account is empty. You won;t be paid for another week and a half - what do you do?
You turn to credit cards is what - the choice of a plasticized generation.
Why we can't help ourselves around these credit cards
Fancy card designs and catchy advertising aside, America really is addicted to credit cards. Because they're easy, because they're fast and because they play to the single greatest vice we can possibly imagine, the one sin we all strive for in the quest for happiness. Procrastination. Why pay today when you can put off the rough stuff until the end of the month? Credit cards delay all barriers to our instant gratification - fast, convenient, ready to roll.
And safe. LIke it or not, credit cards are substantially safer to have than cash. You can track credit card purchases. If you lose a credit card, you can cancel the thing without fearing too much that someone else is spending your money. And there are bad credit credit cards that give you a chance even when you've proven yourself unreliable, not good for the money. Just try doing that with cash. We dare you.
